Pfizer has recently launched a new drug aimed at improving erectile function in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH.
“I am happy that Pfizer is making Viagra available to men with BPH for the treatment of their erectile dysfunction. This new drug has the potential to improve sexual function and quality of life for the men affected,” said Dr. Ghanawat Pardhan, director, Pfizer Research and Development at Pfizer.
The drug works by relaxing blood vessels in the penis, allowing men to attain an erection when sexually stimulated. The drug is available in 50mg and 100mg strengths.
The drug also has an anti-depressant effect. “Erectile dysfunction is a common condition among patients with BPH,” said Dr. Pardhan. “In this article we will focus on the potential benefits of Viagra,” he added.
The drug has been tested in clinical trials and has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of BPH. Pardhan was one of the first patients to have an erection when he took a tablet of Viagra.
“This medication is a potential treatment for treating BPH,” he added.
Viagra is the brand name for the medication sildenafil, which belongs to the class of drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors. The drug works by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual arousal, thereby helping men to get and maintain an erection. It is available in the form of a tablet, a liquid or a capsule.
